Community grants help light up Aylesham village this Christmas

7 December, 2021

Aylesham4Aylesham received £1,416.67 and £1,900 respectively from Dover District Council’s (DDC’s) summer and winter community grants scheme.

The money contributed towards the Aylesham Christmas Lights Project which was much appreciated by the Aylesham Community this weekend, as they enjoyed the Christmas festivities on Saturday afternoon.

Emily Barnes, who served as DDC’s Community Development Officer for Aylesham until this summer, and Nick Evans, Aylesham’s former DDC Communications Officer, were invited back to the village as the community’s special guests to perform the Christmas lights switch on. Everyone enjoyed the festive afternoon with a Christmas Fayre, Lantern Parade and performances from both the Snowdown Colliery Welfare Band and the Snowdown Colliery Male Choir.

Cllr Trevor Bartlett, Leader of DDC, and Cllr Oliver Richardson, Deputy Leader and Cabinet member for Community, presented the cheque to Ronnie Hill, Chairman of Aylesham4Aylesham, and Mark Townsend, Chairman of Aylesham Parish Council.

Cllr Bartlett said: “I’d like to congratulate Aylesham4Aylesham on receiving the DDC Community Grants Fund for both the Summer and Winter Rounds, as well as organising this evening’s Christmas Tree Lighting Event. You have all been invited to come here today to represent and celebrate this special occasion on behalf of the entire community of Aylesham.

“We’ve all had a year full of ups and downs, but many of us have remained resilient and determined to keep going. As we approach the Christmas season, let us remember that this is the season of giving, and I hope we will open our hearts to those who are lonely and in need, citizens who are less fortunate than ourselves, and spread love throughout.

“Therefore, no matter what faith, belief or mantra you may or may not subscribe to, we all have a responsibility to ourselves and to each other to make a difference that is real and lasting. We are our brother’s keeper. We are our sister’s keeper. So, in this season of hope, let us come together as one people, one family to ensure that we are doing everything we can do to keep the village of Aylesham the community of endless opportunity and boundless optimism for which we are so thankful.

“So, on behalf of myself and the DDC staff – Merry Christmas to you all when it comes, be safe, enjoy and be good to each other.”
