George rides End to End route without leaving home

1 July, 2020

Pensioner George Beever, who lives in Woolage Village, has raised hundreds of pounds for Aylesham charity Bechange Community Hub and Deal Area Foodbank after completing a virtual cycle ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End at the weekend.

As lockdown began in late March, George decided he needed to keep in shape and the best way was to cycle the equivalent 1,000 mile distance on his exercise bike at home.

George, who is nearing his 80th birthday, had been quietly completing his challenge indoors at home until last Saturday (27 June) when he moved his bike outside to complete the last mile on his driveway – to be joined, from a safe distance, by cheering family and friends.

In all, George raised £302 and several food donations from well-wishers to share between Bechange and Deal Area Foodbank. He has also lost 21lbs in weight since starting his epic ride.

Bechange manager Angela Doggett, who watched George ride the last mile (in reality this is from a village called Sennen), said: “George wanted to raise funds for initiatives which were helping local people with food during the pandemic.

“George used to work at Snowdown Colliery and he said that during the 1984 miners’ strike they were helped for 54 weeks by volunteers ensuring affected families still had food.

“Cycling from John O’ Groats to Land’s End is a huge challenge, but to do this virtually on an exercise bike takes real motivation. George is an inspiration to us all and we are so grateful for his support.”

Bechange and Deal Area Foodbank (Aylesham Foodbank) have been working together since the start of the pandemic ensuring local people receive vital food supplies. Bechange has been providing hundreds of cooked meals each week, delivering them to people’s doorsteps.

Deal Area Foodbank quickly put in place a delivery service for people who live in Aylesham and the surrounding area. They have worked closely with Bechange Community Hub which has assisted with their food parcel distributions.

If anyone is struggling during the Covid19 restrictions and needs to access either meals or a Foodbank box they can contact Bechange Community Hub on 07484221970.
