Help Bechange continue to make a difference

21 April, 2020

Hundreds of pounds have been raised so far via an online crowdfunding page to support Aylesham charity Bechange as it continues to deliver pre-cooked meals to vulnerable residents.

As of Tuesday (21 April) the total raised was £579 towards a target of £1,000.

The meals are prepared in Bechange’s own kitchen at its premises at the Aylesham Workshop Project in Ackholt Road, in small teams and friendly, non-contact volunteers deliver direct to people’s doorsteps.

At the moment, meals are being delivered to 80 adults and children each week. They include elderly people who are alone and self-isolating, people who are ill and shielded and families with children who have been pushed into financial hardship.

Bechange manager Angela Doggett explained: “We provide one meal, plus a dessert for each member of the household for a five day period. In our first week we provided over 900 meals and desserts, but we are hearing about more and more people who need this help.

“It is vital that no person whether they are child, adult or elderly person should go without food because of the lockdown. There is very little surplus food at the moment so we are purchasing from a wholesaler.

“We need people’s help to make sure we can keep this project going throughout the crisis. As well as providing meals we are also adding items that some families and elderly people are really struggling to get hold of including sanitary products, nappies, toilet rolls and cleaning products.

“We are also starting to produce weekly information sheets to help people keep informed, up to date on issues such as scams as well as offer interesting and uplifting articles.”

Donations supporting the service have, so far, included Aylesham Parish Council, Dover District Council, Sharpak and local farms.
