Male voice choir sings on!

2 June, 2020

Videoconferencing software has come into its own in the past three months enabling people to enjoy virtual face to face meetings or chats online.

Members of Snowdown Colliery Welfare Male Voice Choir have been making the most of Zoom software for their weekly rehearsals and to learn new songs – although harmonies have proved a little challenging when computer speeds can vary by fractions of a second or if someone’s phone rings part way through a song!

Up to 25 singers have been enjoying virtual rehearsals under the batons of co-musical directors Chris Price and Richard Ansell who have put members through their paces to learn the new pieces – The Animals A-Comin, Offenbach’s Gendarmes Duet, When the Night Wind Howls from Gilbert & Sullivan’s Ruddigore and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody.

The choir’s spokesman Peter Whibley said: “All these pieces are known by some of us, but with new musical arrangements we are being challenged with learning these great new songs.

“There is nothing like a live rehearsal but we have found this a really interesting way to get together once a week and be ready for our first concert once restrictions are lifted.

“In these circumstances our musical directors wield real power – they can mute us whenever they want! This is a great bonus as there can be unplanned interruptions at home such as being handed a cup of tea or partners receiving phone calls – which have sometimes been shared by everyone!”

If you would like to join in at 7.30pm on Monday evenings to see what it is all about, please contact Peter on 07590 916574 so that he can help you with the technology. The choir will warmly welcome you. You can follow the choir on its Facebook page, via YouTube or visit its website
