New skate park opens this weekend

4 September, 2018

Aylesham’s new skate park on Station Field will be officially opened this Saturday (8 September).

Displays of skate boarding and BMX biking will be given by the Far Academy Trust and there will be competitions and prizes for young people to take part in as well.

The fun starts at 11am and the event will carry on to around 4pm. Music will be provided by local DJ Finley Sleith (who also contributed ideas towards the design of the skate ramp with the manufacturer Fearless Ramps), ), the food has been donated by Aylesham Butchers and Aylesham Parish Council, and will be served up by Woody’s Hog Roasts. Some of the cost of the occasion has been covered by a donation from Kohls (KCS) Surveyors.

Costing a total of just over £140,000, the skate park has been taking shape during the past couple of months and represents the single largest ever investment by Aylesham Parish Council which contributed £60,000 towards it. Karllee Construction has kindly donated the basketball stand and hoop, £2,000 has been donated by local company Ovenden’s and the rest has come from Section 106 scheme funding through the Aylesham Garden Village development.

The skate park is a long awaited facility and topped a wish list among local young people who were canvassed by the parish council in the planning stages.

Parish council Chairman Cllr Jo Cartledge said: “This is the biggest ever single investment made by the parish council and we hope our young people will get the best from it.

“We have been working on this project for two years and it is great to see it come to fruition. It’s been designed for scooters, skateboards and BMX bikes so plenty of children from primary age to mid teens should be able to enjoy it.

“It will be a safe place to hang out with friends in a central part of the village. CCTV has been installed to keep an eye on things too.”
