Parish council seeks fitting epitaph for memorial

5 February, 2018

Residents of Aylesham are being invited to come up with a fitting epitaph on the memorial stone to be laid as part of the village’s newly created war memorial in Market Place.

Aylesham Parish Council has already agreed a dedication for the memorial and that is being prepared by a local stonemason now. But the stone would be best finished off with a short epitaph beneath that wording.

The wording already agreed for the dedication is: ‘This memorial is dedicated to all the men and women who have lost their lives serving this country in the two World Wars and other conflicts around the world since 1914.’

The entries will be considered by a selection panel of parish councillors, members of the Aylesham Heritage Centre and other established members of the community.

Anybody who would like to compose something is invited to offer an epitaph, of no more than four lines, to the parish council by Wednesday 28 February. Any submissions can be posted or handed in to Aylesham Parish Council Clerk, 3 Dorman Avenue South, Aylesham CT3 3A or emailed to
